As per the manuscript lists of three private collections in Kerala, namely
the collection of the Tiruvalla Tekkematham, that of the Tiruvalla Mula-
vanamatham, and the Paliyam collection, a further four manuscripts of the
Bhaktimandākinī are known to exist. But, at present it has not been possible
to trace these manuscripts. Even though the manuscript list of the Tiruvalla
Tekkematham, and that of the Tiruvalla Mulavanamatham are available and
indicate manuscripts of the Bhaktimandākinī bearing No. 86B and No. 57
respectively, both the collections of these manuscripts are believed to have
been acquired by the government archives and are now untraceable. Two
manuscripts of the Bhaktimandākinī are also listed in the Paliyam collection
(Ms. No. 676, 683, which is located in Ernakulam District, Kerala), but
while checking these collections these manuscripts were found to be missing.
On consulting the above-described four manuscripts, we immediately no-
tice a number of instances of haplologic omissions found in the Vani Vilas
edition and this clearly demonstrates the necessity of a new edition of this
commentary. For example, while the above manuscripts contain an alter-
native explanation for the compound haribhujapavanāmarśānādhmātamurti
in verse 3,44 the Vani Vilas edition misses out this part completely, result-
ing in a lot of ambiguity. Another such omission in Verse 6 in the Vani
Vilas edition results in a nonsensical sentence.45 In verse 28, a quotation
from the Bhagavatapurāṇa quoted in support of the explanation of the ex-
pression vanamālāńki is provided by these manuscripts, but is found to be
missing in the Vani Vilas edition, thus making the passage incomplete and
incomprehensible.
1.7.1 Presentation and translation
We begin this edition with a running translation of the Viṣṇupādādikeśastotra
along with some notes to highlight and clarify certain images visualised in
the stotra.
The translation is followed by a presentation of the content, of the
text of the Viṣṇupādādikeśastotra. Then follows the edition of the Bhakti-
mandākinī, which is based on the four manuscripts described above. A
separate level of register is presented reflecting the variants found in the
manuscripts. The reference to the citations of the commentary are given in
another register. The sources for most of the citations have been traced,
but certain quotations are yet to be traced.
