attaches to the teaching given before his time.
At the commencement of his Bhashya on the
Taittiriya-Upanishad, he has the following
 
verse:-
यैरिमे गुरुभिः पूर्व पदवाक्यप्रमाणतः ।
 
व्याख्याताः सर्ववेदान्तास्तान्नित्यं प्रणतोऽस्म्यहम् ॥
 
"I offer my constant obeisance to those
Gurus (teachers) who, in former times, have
commented on all the Upanishads by explaining
the words, the sentences, and the proofs."
 
This verse unmistakeably refers to the
Purvacharyas of the school to which he belonged.
Again the Sariraka-bhashya contains explicit refe-
rences to, and quotations from, the writings of
Gaudapada whose name was most prominent in
the Advaita school at the time when Sankara en-
tered upon his own work and mission. Take, for
instance, the following passage. "àà àraide-
"अत्रोक्तं वेदान्तार्थसंप्र-
auftuar: ""With reference to this point,
दायविद्भिराचार्यैः
teachers, knowing the established tradition as to
the purport of the Vedanta, have made the
following declaration". The language used by
Sankara in this and other similar references to
