SUNDARAKANDA

317

When the killing of the monkey was
ordered by the wicked Ravana, Vibhishana
did not approve of the killing of one who
had declared himself a messenger.

Hearing those words of his high-
souled brother, suited to time and place,
the ten-necked Ravana replied him thus :

"To monkeys the tail indeed is a prized
ornament. Let that be set fire to
immediately. With his tail blazing, let
him go."

Hearing his words, the Rakshasas, cruel
through wrath, wrapped up his tail with
torn pieces of cotton cloth.
