[^44]. See S. K. under 1.1.29, where this is given as vārttika in the printed
edition. This is based on the väārttika Samjñopasarjanapratişṣedhaḥ, and the rele-
vant discussion in the Mahābhāşṣya under 1.1.27. See also Nyāsa & Pada-
mañjari on 1.1.27.
[^45]. According to the rule FJasaś śī (7.1.17) the basic suffix ( jas ) is replaced
bysiśī in the case of pronouns. Of the fiśī only iī remains in practical use. Thus
sarva+iī=sarve. In the case of ordinary nouns, i.e. rāma ।+as=rāmāh.

[^46]. This seems to be a reference to Bhattṭṭoji. He says in his Praudḍha-
manoramaā (under Pūrvaparāvara-etc. p. 439; Chowkhamba edn; 1939) thus :
adhunikasamketo hi samjñā; etena viśveşām devānām iti vyakhyātam.
vedaprasiddhatvät. devaganaviseşe viśva-sabdasya ädhunika-samketābhāvāt.

MS. G.
48. The point of the question is this : The word adhara is also to be
counted as a sarvanāman, according to the rule 1.1.34. Consequently, in the
locative case, by applying the pronominal termination smin (7.1.15) the
expression must be adharasmin, and not adhare. For the answer see the next
Note.
49. The rule Pūrvaparāvara-etc. (1.1.34) records that the words listed
therein were regarded as sarvanaman, if the words in the context were relative
terms. For instance see purva-eastern with reference to some thing;
dakṣina southern with reference to some point. Or they should be
