<p lang="en">III Chapter
</p>
<p lang="sa">The third chapter describes the birth and childhood
of Śrī Vyāsayogin. The child is appropriately named
as Yatirāja. In the second year, Balhaṇa performs
chūḍākarma to his son. Yatirāja begins his studies
in his fifth year and shows extraordinary merit. Balhaṇa
performs upanayana ceremony to his son in the seventh
year and soon is sent to a gurukula. The boy spends
four years in the gurukula and having returned continues
the studies of Vyakaraṇa, Sahitya and other Śāstras,
under the able guidance of the scholars, in Bannur.
Śrī Brahmanya Tīrtha who comes to know of the
scholarship that Yatirāja has acquired, wants him to
be sent to him as promised earlier by Balhaṇa Sumati.
Though the parents hesitate for a while, comply with
the assurance that they have given earlier. Balhaṇa
himself takes his son to the Mutt and offers him at
the feet of Śrī Bramhanya Tīrtha. Yatirāja continues
his studies in the muṭṭ. After some time Śrī Bramhanya
Tīrtha who witnesses for himself the rare virtues of
Yatirāja, considers him as the fit person to adore
the pitha. Yatirāja who is not willing to be ordained,
one afternoon leaves the mutt to return to his parents
without informing anyone. On the way, overcome with
