II Chapter

The Chapter commences with the description of

the sorrow that is being experienced by Balhana Sumati

and Lakṣmi who live in the village Bannur, situated

on the Bank of Kāveri. They have no issue and that

is the cause of their sorrow. Once Lakṣmī has a dream

in which Śrī Vedavyāsa appears and gives her a gold

vessel full of moonlight. He also tells her that soon

an ascetic by name Bramhanya Tīrtha will come to

them and fulfill their desire. The dream comes true

when after some time Śrī Bramhanya Tīrtha who was

on a tour of south India, visits Bannur. With great

reverence Balhaṇa Sumati invites Śrī Bramhanya Tīrtha

to his house and offers Bhikṣā. Being asked by Śrī

Bramhanya Tīrtha about himself and the cause of his

sorrow, Balhaṇa informs Śrī Bramhaṇya Tīrtha about

his family and the reason of his sorrow. Accordingly

Śrī Rāmadeva of Kasyapa Gotra was his father. Balhana

was the last among the six brothers. When he could

not get progeny from his first wife, being induced

by her, he married another girl called Akkamma. Through

her also he could not have any issue and that was

the cause of his sorrow. Having listened to him

sympathetically Śrī Bramhanya Tīrtha consoles him and

suggests that he should perform a sacrifice. Following

his suggestion Balhaṇa performs the sacrifice in his

holy presence. After the completion of the Yaga, Śrī

Bramhanya Tirtha takes the remaining Havis that was

offered in the sacrifice and having divided into three
