PREFACE TO FOURTH REVISED EDITION

Endorsing the critical preface of my esteemed predecessors
Dr. H. R. Rangaswamy Iyengar and others, I request our
readers to welcome this fourth edition of Saundaryalahari. The
work essentially is "Tantric" in character and so attracts many,
because of its lucrative contents. The majority of Indians who
find it very difficult to follow the strict "Bhakti discipline"
envisaged by the poineers of the ancient Upanisadic period are
prone to follow this Tantric way of 'Upasana'. To them this
book is very popular on account of their calculated easy means
to the difficult end.

Reading the dubious authorship, much is said as more is to
be said as original manuscripts are not forthcoming. Tradition 1
however ascribes its authorship to Sri Sankarācārya, the illustra-
ted propounder of the Advaita Vedanta. The gap between the
8th Century and the 16th Century A.D.-the period of commen-
tary compel us to conclude that the authorship of the work is
still undecided historically or critically. Whatever the height of
Sankara, his association with many "Cakrasthapana Tradition"
may be the cause for taking his name. Anyway, the book is
really welcome for its lucid style of the poem and its elegance.
It may be recalled that we have the Gangalahari by the great
panditaraja Jagannatha. Almost the same may be the date and
also the form and content.

Shri Vidvan N. S. Venkatanathacharya, Senior Research
Assistant, O.R.I., Mysore, the editor of this edition, has increased
the value of the present revised edition by adding a lucid and
scholarly Kannada translation of the stotras as also by preparing
useful appendixes to the work. It is hoped that the present
revised edition will be welcomed by scholars..
