PREFACE
 
The following pages were composed during my connection with the Bolpur Brahmavidyalaya, which extended over a happy period of seven years, and they were
originally meant for the students there. The boys gave them a glad reception and expressed their fond anxiety to see them in print. Partly to please my former pupils
and partly to do a service to the country at large, I now take leave to present them to the public in the hope that they will not be denied the generous encouragement they deserve.
 
I have attempted, in the course of the book, to offer, as far as possible, a picture of the ब्रह्मचर्य as practised in ancient India, which was rightly believed to be essential
to happiness here and hereafter, and I have spared no pains to describe, so far as space has permitted, the true character of an आचार्य dwelling in a peaceful आश्रम with his family and his students. Liberty has also been taken to quote simple sentences, embodying the high ideals of a ब्रह्मचारी or a गृहस्थ and also of human life in the main, from various ancient works which will, I believe, diffuse the sacred aroma of antiquity over whatever I have written in defence of the eternal principles of purity and right-mindedness.
 
The lessons of the book have been given in the form of dialogues, and the author has made every effort to write as idiomatically and with as much ease and
