THE RAMAYANA

When the evil-averting and good-in-

voking rites had been duly performed for

Rama by his mother and his father, and

he had been protected and blessed by

Vasishtha by means of mantras, King

Dasaratha smelt his dear son on the head

and with a heart full of satisfaction handed

him over to Visvamitra.

First went Viswamitra; then Rama of

great fame, with sidelocks, and carrying

his bow ; and after him went Lakshmana.

After proceeding a yojana and a half

on the southern bank of the Sarayu,

Viswamitra uttered the sweet word 'Rama'.
