THE RAMAYANA

hen followed a battle between the

mighty-armed Rama and the Rakshasa

Ravana which was fierce, highly wonder-

ful and capable of making the hair

stand on end.
 

 
गान्धवेण गान्धर्वेण गान्धर्वं दैवं दैवेन राघवः ।

अस्त्रं राक्षसराजस्य जघान परमास्त्रवित् ॥
 

 
Raghava, expert in all astras, repul-

sed the Gandharva astra of the Rakshasa

king with another Gandharva astra and

the Daiva astra with another Daiva

astra.
 

 
अस्त्रे प्रतिहते क्रुद्धो रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।

अभ्यवर्षत्तदा रामं घोराभिः शरवृष्टिभिः ॥
 

When his astra was thus repulsed,

Ravana, the lord of the Rakshasas, became

angry and then rained down showers of

terrible arrows on Rama.
 

 
राममार्तं तदा दृष्ट्वा सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।

व्यथिता वानरेन्द्राश्च बभूवुः सविभीषणाः ॥
 

Then looking at Rama who was dis-

tressed, the Siddhos, the great sages, and
as, the great sages, and
the foremost monkeys along with

Vibhishana became troubled.
