seems to have been used by Jayadeva as an adjective of
Dhoyi. His reputation as S'rutidhara is referred to by
another commentary of the Gitagovinda viz. the Rasamañjarī.
The fact is further confirmed by a verse attributed to Dhoyi
in the Saduktikarnāmrta the first half of which agrees with
verse 101 of the Pavanaduta. The last half runs. as
follows:-
ख्यातो यश्च श्रुतिधरतया विक्रमादित्यगोष्ठी-
כי
विद्याभत्तेः खलु वररुचेरासमाद प्रतिष्ठाम् ॥"
In the face of this it does not seem reasonable and
prudent to conclude that S'rutidhara was a scholar different
from Dhoyi at the court of Lakṣmaṇasena.
Besides, these five jewels there were other scholars as
well who adorned King Lakṣmaṇasena's court. Some of the
most prominent among these were the three brothers Is'ana,
Pas'upati and. Halayu lha, all authors of ritual compendiums
the works of the last two of whom are still regarded as author-
itative all over Bengal, and Purusottamadeva, author of
Bhāsāvritti, a commentary on Panini's Grammatical aphorisms
excepting those which exclusively pertain to the Vedas."
With regard to the works composed by the 'five jewels' we
do not know much at least in the case of two viz. Umāpati-
dhara and S'arana. Verses attributed to Umapatidhara are
found in the Saduktikurṇāmrta of S'ridharadāsa. He is
also mentioned as haveing composed the Chandrach acharita
1. 'वैदिकप्रयोगानर्धिनी लक्ष्मणसेनस्य राज्ञ आज्ञया प्रकृते कर्म्मणि प्रसजन् वृत्तेर्लघुताय
'हेतुमाह ' - भाषात्तार्थविहतिः । The name of Purusottama is not
mentioned in the article of M. Chakravarti already referred to.
