sumably means a village consisting of people
having the same lineage. (see also Macdonell
and Keith, Vedic Index. Vol. I).
JAYA-SKANDHĀVĀRA-The victorious camp.
Same as Skandhāvāra.
JĀNAPADA—(1) Citizen belonging to the country-
side as opposed to the people belonging to the
city. The term is often found used in the plural
as Janapadaḥ. In that case it should mean the
citizens of the countryside, as a whole.
(2) Jayaswal understands the term Janapadaḥ, in
the sense of a 'Realm Assembly' (HP. p. 229 ff)
or a political institution of the type of a popular
assembly with executive and judicial authority.
