JA
 
JANA-A Vedic term, which means the whole people
or the whole tribe or the whole country, being an
aggregate of several visas. The chief of a Jana,
being a king, is called the Janapati. Cf. viśvā-
mitrasya rakṣati brahmedam bharatam janam,
'the prayer of Viśvāmitra protects the whole
people of Bharata', (Ṛgveda. III. 53.2).
JANAPATI-A Vedic term meaning a King, who is
the chief of a Jana or a group of several Visas
(see Jana).
