PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION
It is scarcely necessary to say, that the technical terms of the
Nyāya Philosophy are employed throughout our whole philoso-
phical literature. Those who have any knowledge of the great
works of our ancestors on the philosophy of grammar or even of
the treatises on the Vedanta and other systems, need not be told
to what extent this is the case. And therefore it is necessary even
for those who may devote their attention to any other of our phi-
losophical systems than the Nyaya fully to grasp the meaning of
the Naiyāyika phraseology, The author's aim, therefore, in the
preparation of this Lexicon has been to assist the student not
only of the Nyaya Philosophy but of all our ancient philosophical
systems.
The preparation of the Lexicon has been a work of great
labour. The annexed list of the treatises consulted shows the
extent of ground which it has been necessary to go over. And
the further labour of selecting and digesting the material has not
been very light. The author, therefore, can hardly hope that his
work is free from imperfections and errors. For these he craves
the indulgence of the reader. But he ventures to hope that the
Lexicon will nevertheless be of some use to those for whose assist-
ance it has been prepared, and if he should succeed, in any degree,
in helping on the study of our ancient Philosophy, he will deem
his labours amply rewarded.

The present edition of my Nyayakos'a may almost be describ-
ed as an entirely new work. The first edition, which was publish-
ed in 1874, consisted of 267 pages only. The present work,
although its contents have been put in as economical and abridged
a form as possible, extends to over 1000 pages.
