I am highly pleased to be acquainted with the new book
entitled NYAYA-PARIBHASIKA-SABDĀVALI written by
Dr. Bishnupada Mahapatra of Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya
Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, New Delhi. Dr. Mahapatra has already
earned reputation as a young scholar dedicated in the field of
Nyāya philosophy, and he has already made several effective
literary contributions, their nucleus being the Nyaya-Vaiseşika
system which holds a very remarkable place in the entire course
of development of Indian philosophy. Nyāya and Vaiseşika are
often treated as one system, though the aims and purposes of the
two systems are different, and in the nature of the treatment of
the respective subjects, each was influenced by the other. Huge
numbers of texts on Nyāya and Vaiseşika have been created by
talented scholar-sages like Aksapada (Gautama), Udayana,
Vatsyayana, Jayantabhatta, Gangesa, Vasudeva Sarvabhauma
and many others. Commentaries and sub-commentaries on the
principal texts are also many and these have been composed
with fidelity, keeping always an eye on academic and
intellectual satisfaction of the readers. Numerous philosophical
terms and phrases have been framed and coined, the purport of
which are sometimes difficult to grasp by individuals who have
not deeply penetrated into the subject.
