Ikṣu ( Saccharum officinarum Linn. ), a stick-tlike (hhhhhhyhhn) sweet plant of the grass family
( madhutṛṇa ), has nodes in stem ( gaṇḍakī ), long
leaves ( dīrghacchada ) with sword-like sharp edges
( asipatra ) and flossy flowers ( tūla ) indicating the
end of the plant ( mṛtyupuṣpa ). The plant is full of
sweet juice ( bhūrirasa, rasāla ) which is the source
of jaggery ( guḍamūla ).
