Aralu (Ailanthus excelsa Roxb.) is a plant
resembling nimba tree but having big leaves
( mahānimba) with long petioles (dirghavṛnta ). It
has bitter and unpleasant taste (tiktaka, kaṭvanga )
and is a good remedy (aralu ) for diarrhoea and dys-
entery).

Mostly medieval nighantus have confused to
distinguish between aralu and śyonāka. All the above
synonyms are from Aştanganighantu which has
described these two separately.
