with yellow rhizomes and flowers (pītā). The rhi-

zomes are good-looking (varavarṇinī ), hairy
(lomaśamūlikā), of golden colour within (kañcani)
and used for dyeing clothes etc. (rañjaṇī). It is also
popular among women as cosmetic (yositpriya,
varṇavilāsinī ) and is used at all auspicious occasions
(mangalyā). In order to distinguish it from dāru-
haridra, it has been named as 'pindaharidra' with
common name as 'haladi'. It is also known by the
synonyms of 'niśa' because of being beautiful like
moon-lit night and also utilised for dyeing (rañjanī,
rajanī). Haladi is a common market article which
draws attention due to its bright colour (hatta-
vilasinī). Haridrā is an efficacious drug for jaun-
dice (haridrā), worms (kṛmighna), prameha
(mehaghni) and poison (visaghnī)
