Śālmalī ( Salmalia malabarica Schott & Endle. )
is a tall, (mānadruma) long-lived (cirajivikā, purānī)
and thorny (kaṇṭakāḍhyā) tree with beautiful red
flowers ( raktapuṣpā, kukkuṭī, śālmalī ) and cotton-
yielding fruit ( tūlaphalā ). It also releases ( mocā )
slimy juice (picchilā, pūraṇī ) and exudation. It is
an efficacious drug used in many disorders (bahu-
vīryā ).
Specific characters
1. Plant—a tall, thorny and long-lived tree, re-
leasing slimy juice and exudation.
2. Leaves —like those of saptaparnṇa[^1].
3. Flowers — beautiful, red.
4. Fruits—cotton-yielding.
5. Uses—efficacious drug used in many disorders.

१. शिग्रुः (भा०) – शिनोति तीक्ष्णतां विदधाति, 'शिञ् निशाने' ।
२. अक्षीवः (भा०) –न क्षीवो मदयुक्तः, मदनाशक इत्यर्थः ।
