Śālmalī ( Salmalia malabarica Schott & Endle. )

is a tall, (mānadruma) long-lived (cirajivikaā, purānī)

and thorny (kaṇṭakāḍhyā) tree with beautiful red

flowers ( raktapusṣpā, kukkuti, Śālmalṭī, śālmalī ) and cotton-

yielding fruit ( tūlaphalā ). It also releases ( mocā )

slimy juice (picchilaā, pūranṇī ) and exudation. It is

an efficacious drug used in many disorders (bahu-

vīryā ).

1. Plant—a tall, thorny and long-lived tree, re-

leasing slimy juice and exudation.

2. Leaves —like those of saptaparna'.
