Satāvarī ( Asparagus racemosus Willd. ) is a
climber difficult to perish (durmarā ) and free from
external invasion ( abhiru ) due to presence of re-
curved spines ( adharakantṇṭakā ). It has thin linear
leaves ( śūksmapatrā ) like those of snake's tongue
(phanijihväāparṇī) and numerous succulent tuberous
roots ( śatavariī, pivariīvarī, bahusutaā, śatapadī ). It is of
saumya ( watery ) nature ( nārāyanī ) due to predo-
minance of water element and as such antagonistic
to tiīksnṣṇa ( sharp, irritant) substances (dviīpiśatru ).
It is tasteful ( śvadurasā ), efficacious in many dis-
orders (śatavīryā) and regarded as one of the best
drugs ( variī ).
