Bhallātaka (Semecarpus anacardium Linn.) is
a tree with irritant sap of the bark (bhallī). Fruits
are obliquely ovoid (dhanurbīja), seated in fleshy
orange cup (agnimukhī) and with oily nuts (taila-
bīja), the juice of the fruit produces blisters and
swelling on touch (aruṣkara, śophakṛt). It is a highly
potent (vīravṛksa) and sharp (bhallātaka) drug
which kills worms and organisms (kṛmighna,
bhūtanāśana) and is useful in tumours (bhedana ),
vātika disorders (vātāri) and as blackening agent
(rañjaka).
