APPRECIATION
I have heard but vaguely that Gangadevi, the royal consort of
Veerakamparaya, the son of Bukkaraya (ruler of Hampi Vijaya-
nagar) and an embodiment of Dharma and heroism, immortalised
and made over-flow, befitting her name the amazing exploits of her
royal husband in her memorable book "Madhura Vijayam" over-
flowing with a rare poetic melody. But, I have not had the
fortune of reading this marvellous book so far. Words fail me
when I endeavour to describe the rapture when Vyakarana Vidya
Praveena, Ubhayabhasha Praveena, Sahityalankara, Sahasrava-
dhani Sri Pothukuchi Subrahmanya Sastri brought to me his
commentary of Madhura Vijayam and feasted my ears with a
reading of few extracts from his commentary. It was a veritable
literary feast. The All Merciful God Lord Hayagriva appears to
have brought this talented commentator to me to relieve me from
the agonies and ailments of age.
It might sound blasphemous to say that the poetess Gangadevi
excelled divine Kalidasa in flight of poetic imagination and yet it
appears to be true. The learned opine that the commentator of a
poet should be far abler than the poet himself. Mallinadha
