2. II. [This refers to a peculiar custom of proclaima-
tions of challenges for performing very difficult tasks. A
royal officer, accompanied by several subordinates, moved
through the city, and the proclaimation was made with the
beating of a drum at all the principal cross-ways and other
places of the city. One who wished to accept the challenge
touched the drum with his palm and was conduced to
the king or the chief minister with due honour. We get
a number of references to this custom in the Old Guj.
