विषादः Viṣādaḥ
: VisādahFrustration : Frustration :

The word vişṣāda (vi √sad a < ghanñ) primarily means dejection, dissa-

pointment, grief, frustration, despair etc. The figure Visṣāda, otherwise

called Viṣādana, is rhetorically a kind of expression that highlights

the attainment of just the opposite of the desired object without

any endeavour. This alamṃkāra is a late discovery and recognised by

Appayya and Jagannatha only. Jagannaātha criticises the view of

those who want to include Vișṣāda in Vişṣama and opines that Visṣāda

is to be found outside the case of Visṣama though some instances of

the former might not be different from the latter. He also says that

in some cases there might be partly Vișṣama and partly Viṣṣāda.
