Yathāsamkhyam: Relative Order

यथासंख्य
म् Yathāsamkhyam : Relative Order :

Yathāsamkhya literally means description of something in a relative order.

Rhetorically it occurs when a reference about some object is poeti-

cally given in a methodical order or sequence. This figure is other-

wise termed Samkhyaāna or Krama by some scholars.

The salient features of this alamkāra are as follows:

(i) there is a reference to two or more objects,

(ii)

these objects are ideally set in a proper sequence (ie one

after another),

(iii)

the contextual and the non-contextual (ie the upameya

and the upamāna or the prastuta and the aprastuta) are

given in a definite order,

(iv) either some words or ideas are put in a proper order,

(v) some ideas are connected together in such a sequence

that the entire meaning of the statement becomes

revealed in the order of one idea focussing the another

in the given order.
