भणितिः Bhanitiḥ: Artful diction :
The word bhanṇiti (√bhanṇ to speak ti <ktin) literally means speech,
expression, statement, saying etc. As a figure of sppeech Bhaṇiti consists
of a special mode of expression. It is only Bhoja who has recog-
nised some uncommon figures and Bhanṇiti is one of them. It is to
be noted here that Kuntaka has used the term bhanṇiti in a very wide
sense along with vakrokti which is defined as vaidagdhya-bhangi-
bhanṇiti ie stylistic mode of expression. According to him, all vari-
eties of figures of speech, riīti or mārga (literary style or technique)
and dhvani (suggestion) are but different forms of vakrokti. Here
Bhanṇiti, according to Bhoja, implies beauty of expression, but its
scope has been restricted to an ordinary figure only.
eg 1. ābharanṇasyābharaṇam praśṃ prasādhanavidheḥ prasādhana-višśeṣaḥ
upamānasyāpi sakhe pratyupamānamṃ vapus tasyāḥ.
आभरणस्याभरणं प्रसाधनविधेः प्रसाधनविशेषः ।
उपमानस्यापि सखे प्रत्युपमानं वपुस्तस्याः ॥
O friend, she has a charming figure--
The decoration of all decor,
An extra-ordinary fashion of all fashions
The finest standard of all comparisons.
2. praṇamatyunnati-hetor jiīvita-hetor vimuñcati prāṇān
duḥkhiīyati sukha-hetoḥ ko muḍhaḥ sevakādanyaḥ.
