physical basis which had the effect of turning for several
centuries the attention of their respective followers to the
essentials of religion and away from the unmeaning formali-
ties and revolting practices that passed for religious exercises
in those days of corruption.
 
The two other commentaries that are included in this
volume the one on the hymn itself by Svayamprakáśa* and
the other on the Vártika by Rámatírthaf-have no indi-
viduality of their own, and they are valued as explaining
clearly brief or obscure statements of doctrine, of which
there are several in the Stotra and the Vártika.
