sundara, Upadeśaratnākara xix, 66 ff. (p. 162a), Munisundara's
wording is but slightly different from that of our text. It is clear
that his text is taken from some manuscript belonging to the same
recension as the MS. on which our edition is based. His complete
readings are given in our Variants ॥ गुणयंति. गुण
Cp. Munisundara, Upadeśap. xv, 113f. Op. Old Guj. गुणवुं (same
signification; भणी गुणी 'having learnt and repeated', Hemānand's
Vetālapañcaviṃśatikā 14, 14). ॥- उपश्लोकं पठिताः = उपश्लोकि-
ता: ॥- On the village poets see above, p. 6. The village
poet of our story wishes to write correct Sanskrit like the Bhara-
ṭakas in tales 20, 26, 28, and 32. His stanza is a mixture of
Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Gujarati words. चट्टा , nom. pl. = Ssk.
* च्छात्त्रकाः; लंब Guj. = long; tall. पठति for पठन्ति, as Old Guj.
पठइ stands for the singular as well as for the plural; भुख Guj.
= hunger. Transl.: 'O Bharaṭaka, your pupils, the tall, and well-
fed (stout), and prosperous (rich), do not recite (learn), not repeat,
and not make poetry. And I [plur. of modesty] am reciting
(learning), but [instead of, 'and'] I am making poetry; notwith-
standing I am starving with hunger. What is here the fault of deeds
[done in previous existences]? The metre of the stanza is Mâlinî.
