6. TEXTUAL CRITICISM OF BHALLATA SATAKA:
Dr. V. Raghavan in his article entitled Bhallata Sataka gives
us useful information about one printed book, three manuscripts
of the text and one Sanskrit commentary on Bhallata Sataka.¹
He discloses this fact that though we have a printed text of
Bhallata Sataka published in Kavyamālā Series (Gucchaka IV,
in 1899) at Bombay, we are not informed of the manuscripts
on which that edition was based. Quite a large number of
Bhallata's verses are found in the anthologies and sometimes
the anthologies ascribe verses found in the Bhallata Sataka to
other poets also. These ascriptions to other poets and the
variant readings found in the citations of some of these verses
in the anthologies were pointed out in the foot-notes in the
Kavyamālā cdition. Though the Kävyamālā text has one hundred
and eight verses, all of them however, cannot be ascribed
to Bhallata. Of these verses 31
(65) etc, is quoted by
Anandavardhana as his own verse of his Dhvanyaloka. The
verse fat
(98) etc., occurs in the Locana
commentary of Dhvanyaloka. Abhinavagupta quotes it as a
verse of his own teacher, Bhaṭṭenduraja who lived after
Bhallata.
Of the other verses, many are ascribed to poets other than
Bhallata in the anthologies. The Kävyamālā editor notes the
evidence of only two anthologies, the Sārngadharapaddhati and
Subhāṣitāvalī to which can be added evidence of Jalhana's
Süktimuktāvalī also.
The second verse युष्माकमम्बरमणेः प्रथमे मयूखाः is ascribed to
Bhagavata Amṛtadatta according to the Subhāṣitāvalī (verse 73).
The verse 9 कोऽयं भ्रान्तिप्रकारः तव पवन etc., which is cited anony-
mously in the Sarngadharapaddhati (794) is ascribed to Bhagvata
Amṛtadatta in the Subhāṣitāvali (1032) and the Sūktimuktāvalī
(p. 63). The following 50 verses are given as of Bhallata in the
anthologies :
