INTRODUCTION.
The Bhasa Problem.
a
Bhāsa, the worthy predecessor of Kālidāsa, was to us a
mere name until in the year 1912 the late Mahāmahopā-
dhyāya Ganapati Sastri claimed to have discovered
number of plays written by Bhāsa which were published by
him in the Trivandrum series. The number of these plays
ultimately came to thirteen. These fall into two broad
divisions the Epic-Pauranic and the legendary; the form-
er includes plays which are based upon the Mahābhārata,
the Rāmāyaṇa and the Viṣṇupurāṇa; while the latter
comprises plays that derive their plots from the Bṛhatkathā
and other popular legends.
The following are the names of the plays thus classi-
fied:--
1. Probably from the Bṛhatkathā--
II. Rāmāyaṇa
III. Mahabharata-
1 Svapnavāsavadatta (Sv.)
2 Pratijnayaugandharāyaṇa (Pry.)
3 Avimāraka (Avi.)
4 Cărudatta (Căr.)
5 Pratimā (Prat.)
6 Abhiseka (Abhi.)
7 Pañcharātra (Paña.)
8 Dūtavākya (Dūta.)
9 Madhyamavyāyoga (Madhya)
10 Dūtaghatotkaca (Dgh.)
11 Karṇabhāra (Karṇa.)
12 Ürubhanga (Ü.)
IV. Krisna legend- 13 Balacarita (B.)
