ering some flowers and plac-

a tree, I started for tak-
ing bath in a nearby

river. Then I came across
a wearied woman with a
baby in her arms enquir-
ing whether there was any
place nearabout where she

her how she happened to
be in the forest she told
me as follows:-
am the nurse of
Savrata, the daughter of
Kalagupta, the merchant
magnate of the island of
Kalayavana. She was mar-
ried by Ratnodbhava, the
son of Padmodbhava, a
leading merchant of Puspa-
pari. The couple were
living at Kalayavana. On
hearing of the accession of
Rajahamsa he started in
a ship accompanied by his
pregnant wife and me with
the object of meeting him
and his brothers. But on the
way the ship was wrecked.

swam ashore catching hold
of a log. What happened
to Ratnodbhava is not
known. Savrata gave birth
to a child today and is
lying unconscious at the
foot of a tree. Since it

the forest, I started in
search of the path-way
to the country, and as
it was improper to leave
the baby with its mother
who was lying very much
