PUBLISHERS' NOTE Syamala Dandaka is a short but thrilling prayer addressed to Goddess Kali in the form of Syamala. According to tradition, this little work is said to have been composed and recited by Kalidasa when he had the vision of Kali in the temple where he went at the bidding of his wife to propitiate the Goddess. The Chief merit of the poem lies in the sweet and soulstirring melody of its style. This is a very popular Dandaka in Sanskrit. ole at or noutbf fotobu The work begins with two verses in the 'Upajati' metre which are followed by two more verses in Anustup'. Then begins the Dandaka, a Sanskrit metre which should havea minimum of twenty-seven syllables in a line.. All lines in this work are not of equal length.. The arrangement of syllables in Dandakas has a rythm and melody of its own. 6 Publishers' Note A literal English Translation of a Sanskrit prayer book of this type, abounding in vocatives and adjectives beautifully woven in long compounds, may have many short-comings. We would consider our effort to provide an English translation amply rewarded if it helps the readers to understand the general content of the prayer. We are greatly indebted to Sri T. K. Ramachandra Aiyer, M.A., B O. L., Assistant Lecturer in Sanskrit, Government Victoria College, Palghat, for his valuable suggestions and able guidance in bringing out this edition which, we hope, will be a useful addition to the Stotra Literature.
